Our Story

Sadleir Drama Club is an amateur dramatic group based in Standon, Hertfordshire. We stage two productions each year in Spring and Autumn.

Our History

It was 1944, the Second World War was still raging and many of the young men from the villages of Standon and Puckeridge were far from home, engaged in military activities. However, for the women left behind a little light relief from the privations of war-time life was needed, so they came up with the idea of doing some amateur dramatics – and SADLEIR DRAMA CLUB came into being.

At first, the Club had to present plays with predominantly female casts, but after the War, the returning men joined in and the club really took off.

Standon Village Hall has been the Club’s home since the beginning. It is not the easiest of venues – there is no permanent stage and not a great deal of room backstage, but it is our home and, by continuing to perform our plays here, we feel we are very much part of the local community.

We are proud to say that we have managed to present one or two productions every year since 1944. We have done comedies, tragedies, and children’s plays. Since the Club’s 40th anniversary, we have presented ‘anniversary’ productions every ten years involving as many members as we can possibly muster.

We are keen to welcome new members who share our enthusiasm for being on stage or working behind the scenes. Please get in touch via our contact page if you are interested in finding out more about the club.
